Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings are one of the most common dentistry services available and are key to maintaining optimal oral health. Dental cleanings are recommended twice a year by physicians, during which you will receive a thorough physical exam and cleaning of your mouth.

To begin, your dental hygienist will examine the teeth and gums for potential problems or concerns. Depending on your dental and medical history, your dentist may also require an X-Rays at this time. Next, your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar around the gum line and teeth using special dental instruments. Once the tartar has been completely removed from the teeth and gum line, the teeth will be polished with a high-powered brush. Lastly, your hygienist will floss in-between each tooth and have the doctor come in for a quick assessment.

Dental Scaling

Dental scaling is a form of deep cleaning that targets gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. Typically, scaling is recommended on patients with excessive plaque and tartar build-up. Gum disease causes gum tissue, which normally fits tightly around the tooth, to loosen resulting in gaps between the teeth and gums called pockets. These pockets often begin to fill with plaque leading to bigger pockets, cavities, and in severe cases tooth loss.

If your hygienist notices pockets that are 4 millimeters deep or more, you’ll likely be recommended a scaling procedure to be done. During a dental scaling, your hygienist will use hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler with a vibrating metal tip with water spray to chip away tartar and flush out the pockets. This procedure can be uncomfortable, so be sure to let your doctor know if you have any concerns prior to your appointment.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are also common in general dentistry as they are used to fill in cavities in a patient’s teeth. Cavities are formed from the acids in plaque which break down tooth enamel and create holes in the tooth. This can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss, making it difficult or painful to chew and talk. Luckily, a dental filling eliminates harmful bacteria and prevents further damage from occurring.

First, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth that needs filling. Then, a handpiece will be used to remove the decay from the tooth. Once this has been completely removed, your dentist will prepare the tooth for filling by cleaning out the cavity and removing any debris or bacteria from the area. The cavity is then filled with composite resin, to prevent anything from getting in the cavity. Composite fillings are the most commonly used and tend to closely match the appearance of actual teeth.

Sealants

Dental sealants are used as a preventative against tooth decay. Sealant coatings are made from a thin plastic material that is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth known as molars. Think of dental sealants as an umbrella for your teeth. They help keep your teeth clean by keeping bacteria and acid in your food from settling in your teeth. The sealant quickly bonds to the top grooves of your teeth to cover and protect the tooth enamel.
